Harish Rao interacts with schoolchildren

Finance Minister T. Harish Rao donned the role of a teacher and tested the knowledge and interacted with students in a government school at Kothapally village of Papannapet mandal on Wednesday. He visited the school along with Collector A Harish and MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy and enquired about their interest and what they wanted to do in future.

“How are the schools running after reopening? What do you have to study for becoming a doctor? Will you be here or migrate to USA?” asked Mr Harish Rao while interacting with students. A student replied that he will stay here. He asked another student what he will do if he became a policeman. He also asked students to speak about former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. While enquiring students about how coronavirus had adversely impacted their education, the Minister advised the teachers to focus on imparting better education for students.

Participating in several programmes at Papannapet mandal, Mr Harish Rao said that Telangana has become a model for the entire nation with schemes like Mission Bhagiratha and Mission Kakatiya. He said that the government has not stopped its welfare measures despite lower revenue because of COVID-19 pandemic . Informing that it was only Telangana State government that was offering round-the-clock power supply to the farm sector, he said that rolling stock of four percent transformers was kept ready to meet any contingency. The Minister also promised to provide Kaleshwaram water to Papannapet mandal shortly.

Motera Stadium Renamed After PM Modi: Who Said What On Twitter

The Motera stadium has been renamed to Narendra Modi stadium

New Delhi:

The surprise renaming of the revamped Motera cricket stadium in Gujarat after Prime Minister Narendra Modi today caused a flood of reactions on social media. The largest cricket ground in the world was launched by President Ram Nath Kovind and has a capacity of 1,10,000.

What was earlier referred to the Motera Stadium or the Sardar Patel Stadium will now be called the Narendra Modi stadium. The stadium will be a part of the planned Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in the city.

Amid controversy over the renaming, the government said the name change involves only the Motera Stadium and the entire sports complex continues to be named after Sardar Patel.

The BJP’s rivals and critics, however, accused it of “insulting” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a freedom icon and India’s first Home Minister.

Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted: “Stunning Motera Cricket Stadium Kudos. However Sardar Vallabhai Patel, great son of India, whose name was used extensively to imply he wasn’t given his due, we now see his name erased from the stadium. I am certain Hon PM will object to his name being used to write-over India’s Iron Man.”

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted a quote in Hindi by Sardar Patel.

“There is something unique in this soil, which has always been the abode of great souls despite many obstacles,” she tweeted.

Congress leader Hardik Patel accused the BJP of using Sardar Patel for votes and then disrespecting his memory. “The world’s largest Ahmedabad-based Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium has been renamed the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, is it not an insult to Sardar Patel? The BJP, which asked for votes in the name of Sardar Patel, is now insulting Sardar Saheb. The people of Gujarat will not bear the insult of Sardar Patel,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani targeted the renaming with a jibe.

“The two main pavilions of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad are named Adani and Ambani! What a coincidence!” Mr Mevani tweeted in Hindi with the hashtag #HamDoHamareDo.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar and other BJP leaders welcomed the renaming.

“By making fitness an unwavering part of people’s lives, and by making Yoga recognized at the world level, giving the mantra to be healthy to the whole world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s name given to the world’s largest cricket stadium,” Mr Javadekar tweeted in Hindi, sharing photos.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad targeted Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.

“Have Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi ever praised world’s tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia? Have they visited it? What more can be said?” Mr Prasad said, reported news agency ANI.

Another BJP leader, Y Satya Kumar, responded to the criticism with a reminder of institutions and tournaments named after the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Newsbeep

“28 sports tournaments, awards & trophies named after members of Nehru-Gandhi family. 19 stadium named after the members of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Same party people are rattled when merely ‘1’ stadium has been named after Narendra Modi Ji which was his vision and brainchild,” he tweeted.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal slammed the renaming and tweeted in Hindi: “The true colour of the self-styled ruler is now clearly exposed! This is also the first time in 70 years! But this will be no doubt the last time! Self-indulgence has yet to come down to shamelessness!”

The cricket ground, which was earlier called the Sardar Patel Stadium, and more popularly known as the Motera stadium, was renamed after PM Modi, who was also formerly a president of the Gujarat Cricket Association. The stadium was the pet project of PM Modi when he was chief minister of Gujarat.

Former diplomat KC Singh criticised the renaming of a stadium after a sitting Prime Minister.

“Has any other stadium named after an iconic figure been renamed after sitting PM? Unless Modi ji gave Sardar Patel a statue and takes Sardar’s stadium in return,” Mr Singh tweeted.

Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, along with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, were also present at the inauguration.

“This stadium was the dream of the prime minister and he had during his stint as chief minister here floated the idea of building the world’s largest stadium,” Amit Shah said.

The stadium was inaugurated as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cricket Stadium by PM Modi in February last year when he hosted a mega-rally there with then US president Donald Trump.

The Congress questioned why the two ends of the stadium were named after corporates seen as close to the government.

The stadium, which can seat 1,10,000 people, is a part of the 215 acre Sardar Vallabbhai Patel sports complex, which, the government says, will be ready to host the Olympics soon.

“All three sports complexes will be able to host all international sports. Whether it is the commonwealth games, or the Asian games or the Olympics, Ahmedabad will be ready for it in six months.

Pratilipi, a storytelling platform for the homegrown writer

Find poems, short stories and novels on the platform, which has 3 lakh writers and more than 2.5 crore readers

Ranjeet Pratap Singh (32), co-founder and CEO of Pratilipi, a homegrown storytelling platform, and Sumit Menaria, one of its star authors — whose novel is scheduled to be published in the first week of March — share few similarities. While Singh is an engineer who grew up in Fattepur, a small village in Uttar Pradesh, Menaria is a chartered accountant who hails from Udaipur in Rajasthan. What bonds the two, however, is a love of books and Pratilipi.

The idea for the storytelling platform had gestated for many years, says Singh. While studying engineering in Bhubaneshwar, he had found that not only was the availability of Hindi content (offline) limited, but it was also practically non-existent online. “I would crib that it should be my choice to read something in English; it should not be because of lack of access,” he says, recalling that the pursuit of a career had him pushing aside thoughts about how to resolve the problem. But when he quit an unchallenging job a few years ago, he decided to do something about it. And so, Pratilipi (a Sanskrit word meaning copy) was born.

Incorporated in 2015, it now boasts 3 lakh writers in 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, English, Urdu, and Odia, and has over 2.5 crore readers. “The idea behind it was very simple. We wanted to build a platform where anybody can publish their work, in any language, set in any place. While there is some public domain content [such as Jane Austen’s works], 99% is fresh, contemporary content published by new writers,” he says. The most popular format is the long story/novel.

The ‘write’ stuff

Menaria (29), who joined Pratilipi in 2017, had started off writing poems and short stories. Following good reviews, he then decided to write a novel in Hindi, Tashree: Don’t look into her eyes. Its success — with a total readership of 74,924 and a rating of 4.7 — has led to the book deal with Bhopal-based Manjul Publishing House and a comic book with Pratilpi Comics (launched in February 2020). “It isn’t the usual love story,” says Menaria, who was pleasantly surprised by the response to Tashree. “It is the story of a college girl, but then it becomes a thriller and later it turns spiritual.”

As it turns out, thrillers and romances do well on the site. Did 2020 reveal any new trends, especially with more people turning to reading during the lockdown? “If you look at the various regions and languages, there are a lot of differences in what genres people like. But the top are suspense/thriller, romance and horror,” says Singh, who used to devour Champak and Nanhe Samrat as a boy before moving on to classics by Premchand, Nirala and Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. “We also have a lot of stories that aren’t very popular in the offline world, such as historical fiction, which got a boost during the lockdown.”

Picking the story for you

Interestingly, Pratilipi gathers data about everything, including where someone stopped reading a book. “We look at about 130 different parameters to create our personalisation recommendation, the most important of which is the completion rate. The basic understanding is that we don’t want to be a ‘click-baity’ platform where people put up an attractive image and a few good pages, but after that goes on about nothing. We try to focus on [good] content, which is why the completion rate is one of the most important parameters.”

Sumit Menaria

Singh shares that any work that’s uploaded on the site has to be original or something that the writer owns the copyright to. “Also, any content that goes against Indian laws is not allowed, such as pornography and hate speech.” I tell him that I had come across a story that seemed to violate one of these norms. What happens to such content? “Readers can flag anything that violates our terms of service, and our content moderation team will take it down. We have also built different tools into the platform that figure out which content should be weeded out,” he says. “At the first violation, the content is deleted and the author gets a warning; with the second violation, the author’s account is suspended.”

What’s next?

Pratilipi recently announced a partnership with entertainment company Yali DreamWorks to develop and co-produce a web series based on a book trilogy — Murdo Ki Train, Shaitan Se Samjhauta and Niya — by author Varsha Srivastava. There are several other big plans for the future too. “We began working on securing licensing opportunities with third party content platforms about a year ago and, for the last six months, we have begun to see these opportunities come to fruition. Along with Storytel and Manjul, we have an exciting licensing opportunity that I cannot talk about just yet. But all will be revealed very soon.”

Meanwhile, people have been contacting Menaria for advice. “I tell everyone to start writing and to put it on Pratilipi, where they will get genuine readers.” And he is walking the talk; he finished his second novel, Anamika, last year.

Biden administration withdraws from transgender athlete case

The Justice Department and the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights withdrew their support for the case ahead of a hearing scheduled for Friday on a motion to dismiss the lawsuit

The Biden administration has withdrawn its support for a federal lawsuit in Connecticut that seeks to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ high school sports.

Connecticut allows high school athletes to compete in sports according to their gender identity.

The lawsuit was filed a year ago by several girl runners who argue they have been deprived of wins, state titles and athletic opportunities by being forced to compete against two transgender sprinters.

The Justice Department and the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights withdrew their support for the case ahead of a hearing scheduled for Friday on a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

The Trump administration’s intervention in the case last year came as state legislatures around the country debated restricting transgender athletes’ participation to their gender assigned at birth.

Seventeen states considered such legislation, and Idaho passed a law. The Republican-controlled Mississippi legislature overwhelmingly approved a similar bill earlier this month.

Supporters of restrictions on transgender athletes argue that transgender girls, because they were born male, are naturally stronger, faster and bigger than those born female.

Last March, then-Attorney General William Barr signed what is known as a statement of interest in the Connecticut lawsuit, arguing the state’s policy runs afoul of Title IX, the federal law that allows girls equal educational opportunities, including in athletics.

In a filing Tuesday, Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham and other department officials withdrew Barr’s statement, saying, “The government has reconsidered the matter.” Attorneys for the plaintiffs declined to comment.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference has said it is following a state law that requires all high school students be treated according to their gender identity.

The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights last spring and summer sent letters threatening to cut off some federal funding to Connecticut school districts that followed the policy.

On Tuesday, the office notified those involved that it was withdrawing those letters “as well as the underlying findings and determinations,” and does not wish to become a party in the lawsuit.

On his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere. Former president Donald Trump had rolled back protections for transgender people while in office.

Dan Barrett, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut, which represents the two transgender athletes in the lawsuit, said Tuesday’s action represents “a hint that the government, the Department of Education, may now have a different view of Title IX.” CIAC executive director Glenn Lungarini has said the organization’s transgender policy was formed with federal and state guidance and that multiple courts and federal agencies, including the Justice Department, had previously acknowledged that the term “sex” in Title IX is ambiguous.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said Tuesday he was pleased with the Justice Department’s decision to withdraw Barr’s statement.

“Transgender girls are girls and every woman and girl deserves protection against discrimination. Period,” he said in a statement.

Delhi To Ask For Covid Report For Arrivals From 5 States: Sources

Coronavirus Cases in Delhi: The rule will be on from Friday midnight to March 15, 12 noon, sources said

New Delhi:

With a spurt in coronavirus cases in five states, Delhi will make it essential for those arriving from those states to carry a negative Covid test report from Friday, sources say.

People travelling to Delhi from Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab by flights, trains or buses will have to show a negative RT-PCR test from Saturday to March 15. Those entering Delhi by road have been exempted.

Official orders will be issued later today.

Sources say the Delhi government took the decision because in the past week, 86 per cent of the new virus cases have emerged from these states.

Officers in these states will be asked to verify Covid negative reports from tests taken up to 72 hours before the flight before allowing passengers to leave for Delhi.

The new rule will be in place from Friday midnight to March 15, 12 noon, sources said.

Maharashtra and Kerala alone account for 75% of the country’s current active cases after a sudden rise in new infections in recent days.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of 5,210 new cases, followed by Kerala (2,212) and Tamil Nadu (449). Maharashtra reported 18 deaths, followed by Kerala with 16 and Punjab 15, said the health ministry.

States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand have announced similar restrictions on people travelling from these states.

In Maharashtra, cases have been on the rise in Mumbai’s suburbs and Nagpur, Amravati, Nashik, Akola and Yavatmal.

Maharashtra has announced a state-wide ban on social, political and religious gatherings, besides imposing fresh local lockdowns or curbs in districts like Pune and Amravati.

Punjab has also seen a rise in the weekly positivity rate and the number of cases.

The surge in the five states has sparked fears of a second wave, with the Centre directing them to stress on strict surveillance, containment and RT-PCR-testing.

The Union Health Ministry has also written to all states and Union Territories on the need to significantly enhance the pace of vaccination.

Decoded: the secret message on Mars rover’s giant parachute

Cape Canaveral (U.S.) The huge parachute used by NASA’s Perseverance rover to land on Mars contained a secret message, thanks to a puzzle lover on the spacecraft team.

Systems engineer Ian Clark used a binary code to spell out “Dare Mighty Things” in the orange and white strips of the 21-metre parachute. He also included the GPS coordinates for the mission’s headquarters at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Mr. Clark, a crossword hobbyist, came up with the idea two years ago. Engineers wanted an unusual pattern in the nylon fabric to know how the parachute was oriented during descent. Turning it into a secret message was “super fun”, he said Tuesday.

Only about six people knew about the encoded message before Thursday’s landing, according to Mr. Clark. They waited until the parachute images came back before putting out a teaser during a televised news conference on Monday.

It took just a few hours for space fans to figure it out, Mr. Clark said. Next time, he noted, “I’ll have to be a little bit more creative.” “Dare Mighty Things” — a line from President Theodore Roosevelt — is a mantra at JPL and adorns many of the centre’s walls. The trick was “trying to come up with a way of encoding it but not making it too obvious,” Mr. Clark said.

As for the GPS coordinates, the spot is 3 metres from the entrance to JPL’s visitor centre.

Another added touch not widely known until touchdown: Perseverance bears a plaque depicting all five of NASA’s Mars rovers in increasing size over the years — similar to the family car decals seen on Earth.

Deputy project manager Matt Wallace promises more so-called hidden Easter eggs. They should be visible once Perseverance’s 2-metre arm is deployed in a few days and starts photographing under the vehicle, and again when the rover is driving in a couple weeks.

“Definitely, definitely should keep a good lookout,” he urged.

'Team Baghel' Training Assam Congress Leaders, Workers Ahead Of Election

Assam Congress is hoping to emulate Chhattisgarh model of winning against the BJP

Guwahati:

With less than two months to go for Assam elections, the opposition Congress hopes to put up a strong fight against the ruling BJP, despite several top leaders switching parties in the last five years.

The party hopes to follow the Chhattisgarh model, after it successfully unseated the Raman Singh government in a landslide victory in 2018 polls.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is the Congress’ observer for this Assam election, and has imported a dozen of his tacticians to mentor leaders and workers from every constituency in the art of taking on the BJP.

Every training session begins with the administration of an oath (in Hindi) – the oath reinforces the individual’s resolve to remain committed to the Congress and to India’s constitution.

Members of ‘Team Baghel’, as they are called, have been handpicked by the Chief Minister and are camping out in different parts of Assam, working on everything from booth-level sessions to workshops for party leaders.

“The commitment and dedication in the way they worked against the BJP. With that same spirit, dedication we can fight in Assam to oust the BJP,” Assam Congress Chief Ripun Bora told NDTV.

Newsbeep

The team consists of advisors to the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, MLAs and district functionaries, and their progress is being monitored by Mr Baghel, who is also one of the Congress’ star campaigners for this election, directly.

“In Chhattisgarh we had rigorous training for people from below booth levels and, therefore, were able to develop a strong base. Here, we realised that there are already many workers… we only need to unite them… to motivate them and make them ready to fight polls,” Vinod Verma, an advisor to Mr Baghel, told NDTV.

The exit of top Congress leaders, MLAs and party workers over the past few years has left the opposition party in rickety condition. The death of three-time Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in November last year made things worse, and left the Congress without its tallest leader in the state.

Meanwhile, while the BJP’s defeat in Chhattisgarh in 2018 came as a shock to the party, it is confident that there will not be a repeat in Assam.

“Congress has been losing elections one after the other. Where have they won (in the past) and who is their leader (now)… for us, in this election, the Congress is not the main opponent,” Parimal Suklabaidya, a cabinet minister, told NDTV.

Tiger Woods suffers leg injuries after California car crash

The golfer had to be extricated from the vehicle with the “jaws of life” tools, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement

Golf star Tiger Woods suffered leg injuries Tuesday in a vehicle rollover in the Los Angeles area and is undergoing surgery, authorities and his manager said. His condition isn’t yet clear.

Mr. Woods had to be extricated from the vehicle with the “jaws of life” tools, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. No other cars were involved in the wreck that injured the golfer.

Mr. Woods was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The vehicle sustained major damage, the sheriff’s department said.

“Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries,” his manager, Mark Steinberg, said. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”

A KABC-TV helicopter over the scene of Mr. Woods’ accident showed a car on its side with the front end heavily damaged. Air bags appeared to be deployed. The wreckage appeared to be just off the side of a road on a hillside.

Mr. Woods, whose first name is Eldrick, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, the sheriff’s department said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday about 20 miles (32 kilometres) south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of the upscale communities of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, officials said.

Mr. Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera, where he presented the trophy. He was to spend Monday and Tuesday filming with Discovery-owned GOLFTV, with whom he has an endorsement contract. One tweet on Monday showed him in a cart smiling with David Spade.

According to Golf Digest, also owned by Discovery, the TV shoot was on-course lessons to celebrities, such as Spade and Dwyane Wade. He did not play.

The 15-time major champion last played December 20 in the PNC Championship with his 11-year-old son, Charlie. He had a fifth surgery on his back, a microdiscectomy, two days before Christmas and gave no indication when he would return. The Masters is April 8-11 and when asked if he would be there during the CBS telecast, Mr. Woods replied, “God, I hope so.”

This is the third time Mr. Woods has been involved in a car investigation. The most notorious was the early morning after Thanksgiving in 2009, when his SUV ran over a fire hydrant and hit a tree. That was the start of shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife with multiple women. Mr. Woods lost major corporate sponsorship, went to a rehabilitation clinic in Mississippi and did not return to golf for five months.

In May 2017, Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of the road. He was arrested on a DUI charge and said later he had an unexpected reaction to prescription medicine his back pain. Mr. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and checked into a clinic to get help with prescription medication and a sleep disorder.

US Golfer Tiger Woods In Surgery After Major Car Crash

US Golfer Tiger Woods In Hospital After Major Car Crash

Los Angeles:

US golfer Tiger Woods was hospitalized Tuesday after a car crash in which his vehicle sustained “major damage,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said.

Woods, the sole occupant, was removed from the wreckage by firefighters and paramedics, and suffered “multiple leg injuries,” his agent said in a statement to US media.

“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support,” said Mark Steinberg.

Woods was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The roll-over crash near Los Angeles did not involve any other vehicles. Television images showed the car lying on a patch of grass off the road, with its hood badly damaged.

Woods, one of the most successful golfers of all time, has won 15 major golf championships.

He recently underwent his fifth back surgery, and said he was uncertain if he will be able to play at the upcoming Masters, which he last won in 2019.

According to celebrity website TMZ, 45-year-old Woods was in the area for his annual Genesis Invitational golf tournament at the Riviera Country Club.

“We have been made aware of Tiger Woods’ car accident today,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

“We are awaiting further information when he comes out of surgery. On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers,” he added.

Skier Lindsey Vonn, Wood’s former girlfriend, tweeted: “Praying for TW right now.”

Woods made an astonishing comeback from a series of career-threatening injuries and personal problems to sensationally win the Masters in 2019, his first major title since the 2008 US Open.

He was one of the most revered athletes in the world when he became engulfed in scandal in late 2009.

Woods smashed his car into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his luxury Florida home, sparking a series of scandalous revelations that doomed his marriage and put his game in freefall.

Previous crashes

He later divorced from his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren, with whom he has two children, after a cascade of women came forward to say they had affairs with the golfer, making him fodder for tabloids around the world.

Woods underwent four back surgeries between 2014 and 2017.

In May 2017, Woods was arrested near his Jupiter Island home in Florida after he was asleep at the wheel of his car in a traffic lane.

He said he had taken a mixture of prescription drugs and did not realize they would cause him to fall asleep.

Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was hit with a fine and community service.

He is the winner of 82 US PGA titles, level with Sam Snead for the all-time record.

Woods remains three major victories shy of the all-time record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus, but only four winners in major history have taken a title at an older age than Woods is now.

In 2000-2001, while aged just 25, Woods became the first man to hold the US Open, British Open, the USPGA and the Masters titles at the same time.
